Reno’s Red Lip Rebellion brings the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” back as a year-round live shadow cast celebrating inclusivity, camp and community. What was once an annual tradition has now become a permanent fixture in the local performance scene, complete with a live shadow cast, iconic costumes and the audience callbacks that have made the cult classic a participatory phenomenon for nearly five decades.
Founder and director of the Red Lip Rebellion, Piper Luckey, said the project began as a passion endeavor among friends.
“I got my closest friends, some amazing new folks and our local coffee shop (Coffee N’ Comics) to trust me with tackling a performance out of an agreed love of the movie and desire for the welcoming community surrounding the cult classic,” Luckey said. “I could have never guessed that we would get such a great response, selling out before the doors even opened. After the show, so many folks came up to me and asked, ‘When’s the next show?’ and that was when I realized I wanted to keep this going year-round.”
The Red Lip Rebellion is reigniting interest in the show for a new generation, staying in step with evolving cultural trends and casting performers of all genders, races and identities to reflect the diversity of their audience. With scheduled shows and surprise pop-ups, the group keeps the Rocky Horror community on their toes with excitement.
